Media and its influence

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”.- Walt Disney. Media always offers new things, innovations, information and entertainment when all this is provided it will definitely influence youth. That’s why I have quoted Walt Disney here, when the world is moving forward there is nothing wrong in moving along but the path we choose is important. People working in media should make it a point to show impartial and serious content keeping in mind the media ethics. Media has its positive and negatives but now a days the negative impact is doing round in the news and the main reason is no proper guidance or advice on the ill effects. Most traditional communications of media including telephone, music, film, and television are being reshaped or redefined by the Internet especially social media. When no one has time to sit for sometime internet is the only easiest mode to get information and people of this generation are using it to the core. If the intention of using any form of media is for a good purpose then it is the best thing ever happened to us but many miscreants are trying to find out every possible way to misuse it. Movie and fashion industry are the most benefited from Media especially by targeting the youth making them follow their trend. But they should take a responsibility when they are showing content with so much of violence or sexuality it is making a toll on the crime committed against society especially women. Youngsters in Kerala are very much getting attached to the Social Media according to latest surveys and if the government data is to be believed the most number of cyber crimes committed is also from Kerala , around 55 percent of the 245 cyber crime cases reported last year were from Kerala and according to the ‘Crime in India 2011’ report released recently by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Kerala is way ahead of Andhra Pradesh which came second with 52 cases followed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Sex is on display from movies to television advertisement and that violent and sexually explicit television programming is a major contributing factor to many of society’s worst ills and when social media gives you a cover the youth are tempted to commit crimes. An excessively violent murder movie or a fight scene when viewed by a child or young adult such materialwill be damaging to the child’s psyche . An unstable adult viewing such material might try to imitate such scenes and perpetrate a “copycat” crime. A parent should know what a kid is doing in internet, they should monitor and limit the exposure towards television, keep in mind that the youth don’t think that drinking alcohol or smoking is cool so it’s always good to advice them even if they hate it, there is a limitation to how much a parent can control their teens and in the end Media should take responsibility and stop showing so much of negativity.
