It’s high time that the TV channels should opt for a makeover, for the past few years there has been an explosion of channels in the Indian TV business and there has been immense competition resulting in shows which are created only for the purpose of getting high TRP’S. The era of Dooradarshan was the golden period of Indian television specially the shows they had be it “Flop Show” the first sitcom aired by the channel or serials like Ramayana or Mahabarat the actors were worshiped like gods in every household, the quality of the programs were much better than what we have today. The name of the characters turned to be a household name this was the popularity of the shows aired by Dooradarshan and none of the current channels enjoy this status. It was the content that was the sole reason for those serials/sitcoms being a hit most of the content was on the socio-cultural problems faced by the common man of India. The current serials after its 10 episodes all start looking the same and since there are so many other options on TV people have started to keep on changing channels looking for creative contents. In this industry if one type of format is successful, everyone follows suit and hence there is repetition of content. There is a lack of structured training or guidance, the push for excellence is missing today . These producers should look at international channels and see how natural and new are their concepts. Sitcoms like ‘FRIENDS’ have been aired for more than 10 years only because it’s simple and we can relate to the characters , their serials have no exaggeration of events they believe in minimalism and don’t follow dramatic portrayal of characters or narration , drama is reserved for stage and not for screen. It is about time that TV channels go for a makeover hire people who are talented and make something original, not just concentrate on the entertainment factor but also give importance to quality.
